Time Clock
The one screen your team uses to start work, take a break and finish the day. A running timer, a break button, your hours for today and this week, and a list of your recent shifts.
What it is
Time Clock is the page where you punch in at the start of your day and punch out at the end of it. You open it from the left menu: More›Time Clock. On a phone, tap More in the bar along the bottom, then Quick Actions›Time Clock.
One tap on Clock In starts a big running timer. A Break button pauses your paid time without ending the shift. Clock Out closes the shift, saves your hours, and works out your pay using the rate you were on at the moment you clocked in. Underneath the clock you get your total for today, a bar chart for the week, who else on the team is working right now, and your last 14 days of shifts.
Video walkthrough — coming soon
A short screen recording of a full day on the Time Clock — clocking in, taking a break, and clocking out with notes — is being produced and will appear here. Until then, the step-by-step below covers the same ground.
This guide covers the day-to-day clocking screen. If you are the owner or an admin and you need to fix someone's hours, set pay rates or run payroll, read Time Tracking & Payroll instead.
Your shift
The big card at the top. Clock In, Break, Clock Out. This is the time that turns into pay, and you can only have one shift running at a time.
Your totals
Today and Week of ... sit side by side under the clock. The week runs Monday to Sunday and you can page back through past weeks.
Your recent shifts
Recent Entries lists your last 14 days with the hours, break, rate and pay for each shift, plus whatever notes you left.
When to use it
- Starting your working day, and ending it.
- Stepping away for lunch or an errand without your paid time carrying on.
- Checking how many hours you have already put in today or this week.
- Seeing which of your team-mates are on the clock right now.
- Checking last week's shifts before payday, and spotting a day that looks wrong.
Do not use this page to time one particular job — that is a separate job timer you start from the job itself, and it runs alongside your shift without being paid twice. See Timing a single job below. And if you need everyone's hours in one table, or a spreadsheet for payroll, that is Settings›People›Time Tracking and Reports›Time Tracking Report, not this page.
Before you start
- Your role needs Time Clock access. An owner or admin turns this on under Settings›People›Team Roles, where it appears as Time Clock in the Management group. It is switched on by default for ordinary team members. Without it, the menu item is hidden and the page will not open.
- Somebody should set your pay rate first. Rates live under Settings›People›Time Tracking›Team Pay Rates, where each person is put on either an hourly rate or a fixed daily rate. You can still clock in without one — the timer just shows a yellow Rate not set instead of a rate, and the shift saves with no pay figure against it.
- The rate is locked in the second you clock in. If your rate changes halfway through a shift, that shift keeps the old rate. Clock out and clock back in to pick up the new one.
- Your company may set a maximum shift length. Under Settings›People›Time Tracking there is a Maximum Shift Length box (anything from 0.5 to 24 hours, or blank for no limit). A shift left open past that length is clocked out for you automatically.
- GPS proof is only on some plans. On Pro and Growth, Joby quietly records where you were when you clocked in and out. On other plans you will see the line "GPS and ZIP proof are available on Pro and Growth. Time saved without proof." — your hours still save perfectly, they just have no location attached.
- Live tracking asks your permission the first time. If your company has switched on live location tracking for your account, tapping Clock In opens a window titled Live location tracking while clocked in before anything starts. You have to press Agree and clock in once. See Location and GPS proof.
- Your company may use different words. "Lead", "Office Agent" and "Field Worker" can all be renamed for your account, so the job timer badge may read "Job", "Ticket" or something else on your screen.
Step-by-step
Clock in for the day
- Open More›Time Clock from the left menu.
- The card at the top reads You are not clocked in. Press the big Clock In button.
- If the button briefly says Checking tracking..., wait a second — Joby is checking whether your company needs you to see the live tracking notice first.
- If the Live location tracking while clocked in window appears, read it and press Agree and clock in. You will only be asked once. Pressing Cancel means you are not clocked in.
- The card turns green, a timer starts counting in hours : minutes : seconds, and a small message underneath tells you what time you started, for example Clocked in since 8:02:11 AM.
You do not have to wait around. The button may show Saving... and the line "Clock-in is saving in the background." for a moment — your start time is already the moment you pressed the button, so you can walk away or move to another page immediately.
Take a break
- With the timer running, press Break (the outlined yellow button next to Clock Out).
- The card turns amber, the heading changes to On Break, and a separate break timer starts counting up.
- Optionally type in the Break notes (optional) box — for example "lunch" or "parts run". Whatever you type is kept and added to the shift when you clock out.
- When you are back, press Back from Break. The card returns to green and shows a Break taken: line with the running total.
You can take as many breaks in one shift as you like — they add up. Break time is taken off your paid hours when you clock out.
Clock out at the end of the day
- Press the red Clock Out button. If you were on a break, pressing Clock Out ends the break for you first.
- A Clock Out window opens. If you took breaks it shows Total break time in an amber box, and repeats any break notes you wrote.
- If you have a job timer running, the window warns you that it "will end when this shift clocks out". That is normal — one press closes both.
- Fill in Notes (optional) — the box asks "What did you work on?". This is what your manager reads later, so a short line helps.
- Press Clock Out in the bottom-right of the window to confirm, or Cancel to go back to work.
The card shows Clock-out is saving with the note "You can move around the app while we finish saving." — you genuinely can. Your finish time was set the moment you confirmed.
Timing a single job
- Leave your shift running. Open the job you are working on and go to its Time tab.
- Press Start Lead Timer. Your shift keeps running underneath — the job timer sits inside it and is never paid twice.
- Back on the Time Clock page, a badge appears under the shift timer reading Job timer # followed by the job number.
- When the job is finished, press End Job Timer on the job's Time tab — or just clock out for the day, which closes it automatically.
Job timers are a Pro and Growth feature. On other plans the job's Time tab shows an Upgrade to Pro panel instead, and your ordinary shift clocking on this page is unaffected.
How to check it worked
Clocked in
A Clocked in! message pops up, the card turns green with a pulsing dot, and the seconds are ticking over. Your name also appears in the Working Now card.
Clocked out
A Clocked out! message pops up, the card goes back to You are not clocked in, and today's shift appears at the top of Recent Entries with a finish time instead of the green Active badge.
Break counted
Back on the green card you see Break taken: with a total, and the Clock Out window repeats it as Total break time. After clocking out it shows in the Break column of Recent Entries.
Pay worked out
The finished shift shows a figure in the Rate and Pay columns. N/A or No rate there means nobody has set your rate yet.
- Your totals moved. The Today box and this week's bar for the right day both go up once the shift is closed. A shift still running is not counted in them yet.
- Location was captured. On Pro and Growth you will briefly see "Clocked in. GPS proof will attach when available." and then a line confirming "GPS and ZIP proof captured." If it says "GPS unavailable. Time will still be saved." your hours are safe — only the location is missing.
- Something failed. If you see "Clock-in failed. Please try again." or "Clock-out failed. Please try again." nothing was saved. Press the button again.
Common mistakes
"My clock-in disappeared"
You almost certainly switched company. A shift can only be seen and closed inside the company it was started in. Look for the amber You're still clocked in at another company banner at the top of the page and press Go there to clock out.
Break started on one device, clocked out on another
A running break is remembered by the phone or computer you started it on. If you start a break on your phone and then clock out from the office computer, that break will not be deducted. Clock out on the same device you took the break on, or tell your manager so they can correct it.
Leaving on break instead of clocking out
A break does not end the shift. The shift keeps running underneath, and if it runs past your company's maximum shift length it gets closed for you at that limit. Clock out properly at the end of the day.
Pressing Clock In twice
You cannot have two shifts at once. The second attempt gives you You're already clocked in and nothing is duplicated — so if you are unsure whether the first press worked, pressing again is safe.
- Expecting job time in Recent Entries. That list only shows your paid shifts. Time you booked against a particular job appears on the job's Time tab under Job Time Entries, not here.
- Expecting today's running shift to count in the totals. Today and the weekly bars only add up shifts you have already closed. The hours you are working right now show in the big timer instead.
- Assuming the page is broken because the "Working Now" card is missing. It only appears when at least one person is clocked in. With nobody on the clock, it is hidden entirely.
- Reading "No time entries yet" as lost data. Recent Entries only reaches back 14 days. Anything older is still on record — ask an admin to look at Settings›People›Time Tracking or Reports›Time Tracking Report.
- Fixing a wrong shift yourself. There is no edit button on this page. Corrections are made by an owner or admin from Settings›People›Time Tracking. A corrected shift comes back with a small edited label next to its notes.
- Getting "Failed to clock in" over and over. This usually means your login has not been fully set up for Time Clock in this company. Ask an owner or admin to check you appear under Settings›People›Team Members and have a rate under Team Pay Rates.
More detail (4)
What you see on the page
The clock card
Its appearance tells you your state at a glance:
- Grey, with a clock symbol — You are not clocked in, and one big Clock In button.
- Green, with a pulsing dot — you are working. It shows Clocked in since ..., the running timer, your rate (for example $25.00/hr or $180.00/day, or a yellow Rate not set), any break total so far, and the Break and Clock Out buttons.
- Amber, with a cup symbol — On Break. It shows the break timer, the time you originally clocked in, the Break notes (optional) box and a Back from Break button.
Today and Week of ...
Two boxes side by side. Today is a single figure. Week of ... draws one bar per day, Monday through Sunday, with today's bar in a stronger colour and a Total underneath. Use the arrows in its corner to step back through previous weeks and the Now button to jump back to this one. You cannot page into the future.
Working Now
A row of small chips — one per person currently clocked in anywhere in your company — showing their photo or initials, their name and how long they have been on. The heading carries the count, for example Working Now (4). The card is hidden when nobody is clocked in.
Recent Entries
Your last 14 days, newest first, described as Your last 14 days. On a computer it is a table with these columns:
- Date — the day the shift started.
- Clock In / Clock Out — the exact times. A shift still running shows a green Active badge instead of a finish time.
- Break — total break time for that shift, or a dash.
- Hours — what you are paid for, after breaks.
- Rate — the rate saved with that shift, or N/A.
- Pay — the money for that shift. People on a fixed daily rate see Included in daily pay where a per-shift figure would be misleading, and people with no rate see No rate.
- Notes — your clock-out notes and break notes, with an edited label if an admin corrected the shift.
On a phone the same information is stacked into one card per shift with Break, Rate and Pay tiles. Pull the page down to refresh it. If you have never clocked in, the card simply reads No time entries yet.
Clocked in at another company
If your login covers more than one company, a shift belongs to the company you started it in and can only be closed from there. Switch companies mid-shift and this page will show a plain Clock In button, as though you had never started — while your time quietly keeps running in the other company.
To stop that going unnoticed, an amber banner sits at the very top of the page reading You're still clocked in at another company (or You're still clocked in at 2 other companies), with the warning "Your time keeps running until you clock out there. Switch company to close it."
- Each open shift is listed with the company name and when it started.
- Press Go there to clock out next to it.
- Joby switches you into that company; press Clock Out as normal.
- Switch back to the company you actually want to work in and clock in there.
Make a habit of clocking out before you switch company. A shift left open in another company keeps counting and will need an admin to correct it later.
Location and GPS proof
On Pro and Growth accounts, Joby records where you were at the moment you clocked in and the moment you clocked out, and matches the postal code against the job's postal code where there is one. This is proof-of-attendance, not surveillance — it is two snapshots, not a trail.
The small grey line under the clock card tells you what is happening:
- "Clock-in is saving in the background." — your start time is already recorded.
- "Clocked in. GPS proof will attach when available." — location is still being fetched and will be added on its own.
- "GPS and ZIP proof captured." — both the position and the postal code were recorded.
- "GPS proof captured. ZIP unavailable." — position recorded, postal code could not be worked out.
- "GPS unavailable. Time will still be saved." — usually location permission is switched off on your device, or you are indoors with no signal. Your hours are unaffected.
- "GPS and ZIP proof are available on Pro and Growth. Time saved without proof." — your plan does not include this.
Live tracking (separate, and always disclosed)
Some companies also switch on live location tracking for particular field workers. That is different from the two snapshots above: it follows your route for as long as you are clocked in, including while the app is closed. It is never silent — the first time you clock in after it is switched on for you, a window titled Live location tracking while clocked in explains it and you have to press Agree and clock in.
What it is used for
Showing your work location and route to your company for dispatch, checking time-clock entries, and job records. Only authorised admins, dispatchers and managers can see it.
When it stops
The moment you clock out, or when your company turns it off for your account. Route points are kept for the window your company picked — 7, 14 or 30 days.
If you do not want to be tracked, the notice itself tells you what to do: do not clock in, and speak to your manager.
Who can see your hours
- You — your own shifts for the last 14 days on this page, and your name in the Working Now card while you are on the clock.
- Everyone with Time Clock access — the Working Now card is shared, so your team-mates can see that you are clocked in and roughly how long for. They cannot see your rate or your pay.
- Owners and admins — everybody's entries, rates and pay under Settings›People›Time Tracking, where they can also correct a shift, add one by hand, or delete one.
- Anyone with report access — totals and a downloadable summary under Reports›Time Tracking Report.
